Long before “prompt injection” became a cybersecurity concern, a strikingly similar manipulation technique emerged in 1966 with ELIZA, one of the first chatbot programs ever created at MIT. ELIZA was designed to mimic a psychotherapist by reflecting users’ inputs back to them — but early testers quickly discovered that with carefully phrased sentences, they could “trick” ELIZA into revealing its internal scripts or behave in unintended ways. This early form of linguistic exploitation foreshadowed today’s AI prompt manipulation, showing that even at the dawn of conversational computing, the battle between instruction and interpretation had already begun.
