Interesting Tech Fact:

In 2006, long before “cloud security” became a mainstream concern, engineers at Amazon secretly developed the first internal cloud platform prototype under the codename “Elastic Compute Cloud Alpha.” What’s rarely known is that the initial build included a self-replicating virtual machine system—an early precursor to what we now call auto-scaling security clusters. However, the project briefly went offline after a misconfigured network script caused a feedback loop, unintentionally creating thousands of phantom instances across servers worldwide. This incident became one of the first real-world demonstrations of a “cloud sprawl” vulnerability—where virtual machines multiply uncontrollably—and ultimately inspired modern cloud governance and security monitoring frameworks used to prevent similar runaway events today.
