Long before the age of AI, one of the earliest cybersecurity challenges appeared in 1834, when two French brothers hacked the Chappe telegraph system, an optical semaphore network used for government communication. By inserting false signals into the data stream, they secretly transmitted financial information to gain an advantage on the Bordeaux stock market — effectively committing the world’s first recorded cyberattack. This analog intrusion not only exposed the vulnerabilities of emerging communication networks but also foreshadowed the enduring truth of cybersecurity: every new system, no matter how advanced, creates new incentives — and new opportunities — for exploitation.
